Hands-on experience and real-world skills—that’s what Christopher, a senior at Freeport High School, is gaining weekly through the Youth Transition Services program serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At The Nest at Nassau Community College, he helps restock the food pantry and provides groceries to residents in need. Volunteer opportunities such as this allow Christopher and his classmates to practice teamwork, improve communication, and take responsibility while seeing the impact of their efforts firsthand. On campus at Molloy College, Christopher gains workplace experience in the mailroom and the School Spirit Store. Delivering mail to staff and helping set up merchandise sharpens his organization and problem-solving skills, while giving him confidence in navigating a professional environment. Viscardi’s Independent Living House lets him strengthen daily living skills—from cooking and cleaning to managing chores and making independent decisions. “The skills I learned help me get my tasks done at home,” Christopher shares, showing how each experience builds on the last and prepares him for life beyond high school.
After graduation, Christopher plans to attend BOCES, where he will focus on store management. See Christopher in action — watch a short video about his typical week at youtube.com/@ViscardiCenter
